SPORT

Beaumont PE Deparment strives to create a fully includsive environment in which all pupils have the opportunity to become physically, socially and morally literate individuals. We aim to enrich the lives of our students through sport and physical activity and educate all of those we teach in the lifelong benefits of leading an active, healthy lifestyle.

Sport is a vibrant and successful activity at Beaumont, and there are many opportunities for students of all ability to engage in a wide variety of sports – both during lessons taught as part of the curriculum, and through involvement in the many extra-curricular clubs and team competitions. We aim to enable all students to enjoy their participation in sport and experience all the physical, mental and social benefits that come through taking part and developing their skills.

PE is part of the core curriculum throughout Key Stages 3 and 4 and information about the PE curriculum can be found on the PE Subject page.  Many students leave Beaumont with nationally recognised sports-related qualifications, including GCSE, AS and A levels, BTEC and Sports Leaders Awards. Those students who do not take a course leading to a qualification still continue to take part in a variety of sporting and fitness activities up until the end of Key Stage 4, and those in the sixth form also have the opportunity to continue with sport on one afternoon a week.

We hold lunchtime or after school clubs for hockey, netball, basketball, football, cross country, gymnastics, dance, tennis, rounders, athletics, rugby, and cricket, and alos hold an alternaitve sports Night to promote sports that pupils may not have had the opportunity to play before. Teams represent the school in competitions in most of these sports. Click here for the current term’s practice timetable. Clubs are well attended, and in many cases PE staff are supported in coaching at and organising these activities by sixth form members of the senior sports teams and in particular the Sports Captains. More details are available on the PE Department’s blog http://www.beaumontpe.blogspot.com

The school’s sports teams are well respected locally and a number regularly achieve success in their field. In many sports we are District Champions, and also compete successfully at County and Regional level.

We celebrate our sporting successes and are proud of our students’ sporting achievements. Match reports and half-termly round-ups are normally included in Beaumont Life, our monthly newsletter, and special successes are included on the Beaumont Pride pages of the website. Team and individual successes are also celebrated at a yearly Sports Awards Presentation evening in the summer term. A Sports Day is also held each year in the summer term.

Our gymnasts put on an annual gym and dance display which is well known locally both for its quality, and for the extent to which it enables members of the local community to enjoy the performances and appreciate the level of commitment and skill demonstrated by our students. Attendance at the matinee performance of the display is a highlight for Year 6 children at local primary schools, who are invited to come into Beaumont for the afternoon. Every two years the school also participates in the St Albans and District Gymnastics Display at the Alban Arena.

We are fortunate to have a number of highly talented sportsmen and women amongst our students who have achieved major success both inside and outside of school sports: students’ successes have included being selected to compete at county, regional, national and/or international level in sports including women’s football, hockey, table tennis, cross country, judo, archery, and trampolining.

Beaumont is active in the local schools sporting community; we are a member of the St Albans & Harpenden School Sports Partnership which aims to increase the number of sporting opportunities available for young people across the area and also to make them more accessible. Our School Sports Coordinator (SSCO) Mrs Michele Fox is involved in organising Partnership events locally, and one of the St Albans Sports Ambassadors in 2008/9 was a Beaumont school sixth form student. Several Beaumont students have taken part in a Partnership County-wide project looking at identifying and supporting gifted and talented pupils with physical and/or sensory impairments.
