Beaumont school has earned itself a very strong reputation for the quality and breadth of musical opportunities on offer, the high standards which the students themselves reach, and the significant contribution to the musical life of the community which they make. Musical activities are well supported by students, staff, governors, the local community and the BSA, the latter having made generous contributions in the past two years.
A large proportion of students have instrumental lessons and take part in extra-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to continue playing or to take up an instrument when they join the school, and tuition is available in a wide variety of instruments. Students are also encouraged to join in the many and varied extra-curricular activities on offer. The Concert Band, Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Orchestra all rehearse weekly, either before or after school or during the lunch hour. There are also smaller ensembles for specific instruments, run by the peripatetic teachers. Students should see the Head of Music Miss Doan if they are interested in joining in any of the groups. For the most up-to-date rehearsal schedules, please follow the Music Department on Twitter: www.twitter.com/beaumontmusic (@beamontmusic). In July 2010 the Vocal Ensemble recorded its debut CD, Cantique, which is available for purchase from the school.
The various groups perform concerts regularly both at school and in the local community, as well collaborating with the Drama Department for an annual musical theatre production. There are many musical highlights, including the annual Carol Service, Music Tours to Vienna, Prague and Paris (where students sang in Notre Dame and La Madeleine), Lunchtime Concerts at St Peter’s Church, and our first school opera, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Upper school students have also put on much acclaimed productions of Steven Sondheim’s Company, and a school’s version of Hairspray.
October 2011 sees us taking on the challenging Songs For A New World with KS4 and KS5 students. A lower school musical will be performed in Summer 2012.
Students also enjoy trips to hear professional musicians perform locally and in London. |
