Beaumont School, St Albans, Hertfordshire

CONDUCT

“Behaviour in lessons and around the school is good: parents, visitors and outside agencies such as work experience providers, praise the social skills of Beaumont’s ‘well-rounded’, courteous students.” (Ofsted Report 2008 - full report available here)

Beaumont is a friendly, creative and purposeful community whose members are entitled to feel valued. Courtesy and mutual respect is expected of everyone.

We believe that good behaviour is fundamental to the school’s aim of developing a strong learning environment. It helps create an atmosphere in which pupils are happy to come to school and keen to learn. We believe that it is important for the pupils to learn self-discipline as the foundation of good behaviour and to develop the sense of mutual respect for others which is so important in adult life.

Staff look for and normally achieve a lively, committed response to their teaching, and insist on teaching in an atmosphere of respect for others where everyone wishes to learn.

Clear boundaries of acceptable behaviour are established and made clear to pupils. The fundamental principles are that everyone should

  • Treat all others fairly and with respect and act in a safe and responsible manner
  • Listen to the views and opinions of others
  • Take care of the school’s and each other’s property

On joining the school, students commit to a written code of conduct which forms part of the Home-School Agreement between Parent/carers, School, and Pupil, and this forms the basis of the school’s expectations of them during their school career. Pupils agree to:

  • Have the confidence to seek help if I have a problem

We seek the support of parents in securing high standards of conduct, and will contact them should serious problems arise. Where necessary, sanctions are used, including detentions after school and loss of privileges. The aim is always to encourage pupils to address their own behavioural difficulties as far as possible to encourage them to work to develop better behaviour where this is required.

The school has a number of mechanisms for supporting behaviour management. These are:

  • A well structured pastoral team comprising Form Tutors, Heads of Year, an Assistant Head with a focus on pupils and families (Head of Pastoral Care) and a pastoral assistant.
  • Close links to a range of outside agencies to whom referrals can be made.
  • Clear strategies for behaviour management understood by all staff.
  • Trained peer and staff mentors.
  • SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) supported by a strong Teaching Assistant team.
  • Well informed and experienced subject leaders and teaching staff.
  • Referral to advisers from Connexions, the government's support service for all 13-19 year olds.

Beaumont also shares, with other local secondary schools, the services of a designated Police Community Support Officer.

Full details of the school’s Behaviour Policy can be downloaded here. This policy has been drawn up in consultation with parents, staff and pupils.
