Privacy Notice - Data Protection Act 1998

All schools are required under the Data Protection Act 1998 to issue a Privacy Notice (previously referred to as the Fair Processing Notice) to pupils and parents summarising the information held about pupils, why it is held, and the third parties to whom it may be passed on.

The Privacy Notice has been added to the Policies page of this website and provides details of local authority and DCSF websites where more information is available. Click here to download a copy.

Pupil Data Collection

We would like to take this opportunity to check that the information currently held for pupils is correct and therefore a pupil data collection sheet has been sent home to all pupils on 3 December 2009.  This data collection sheet provides a summary of the information currently held by the school for the pupil.  Please can you check that the details held are correct, indicating any required changes or additions.  Please sign and return the data collection sheet to school via the pupil’s form tutor by Friday 11th December (even if no change is required).

Liam Woods and Vincenzo ('Chinni') Vetere

All at Beaumont have been saddened by the recent unexpected deaths of two of our students.

Liam Woods was in Year 10, and Vincenzo Vetere in Year 12.

The boys died within a week of each other from tragic, but unconnected, causes and our thoughts and prayers are with their families and close friends.

Beaumont has been shocked and upset by the deaths of Liam and Chinni; the whole school community has supported each other in this difficult time, and cousellors continue to be available to offer additional support and advice to students and staff.

Copies of the letters informing parents of our students about the deaths of Liam and Chinni are downloadable here:

Meningitis information

This is the text of the letter sent home 10 November 2009

10 November 2009

The school has been informed by medical staff at the local Health Protection Unit that a member of the school has been taken ill with meningitis. This is being treated as an isolated case and social/school contacts are unlikely to be affected.

As a precaution, however, you should be aware of the symptoms of meningitis, which are as follows:

Severe headache

Raised temperature

Difficulty or pain when looking at light

Neck stiffness

Vomiting

Rash

Confusion

Back or joint pains

If any of these occur then medical advice should be sought promptly.  A raised temperature and a rash occurring together are particularly important signs, and may be suggestive of blood poisoning. It is important to note that, in cases of blood poisoning, the symptoms of meningitis such as neck stiffness and headache may not occur.

You should also consider the possibility of meningitis and seek prompt medical advice in the following conditions:

A sudden change in consciousness level

A change in alertness

A change in the normal pattern of behaviour

Meningococcal bacteria are common about 10% of the population carry them in the back of the nose or throat without causing harm. These bacteria are very fragile and do not survive outside the human body and so are not easily transmitted. They cannot be caught from the air, from clothes or similar objects.

Although close household contacts of cases are given antibiotics, widespread use of these in schools is not generally recommended, as this can obliterate the natural protection carried by many children.

For general information the Meningitis Trust is a 24 hour help line which can be contacted on 0800 028 1828 or by internet access on www.meningitis-trust.org

Information can also be found at http://www.meningitis.org/

Talent Show - Spectacular success!

After six months of planning the Talent Show took place on 21 October. It culminated in  a spectacular event, raising at the last count, £860. This was  above the expected  target and will be well received by the Hillview Housing Project SA. We have formed a link, (via a Beaumont family) to help fundraising to build 10,000 houses, providing water and electricity for deprived families, rebuilding one of Cape Town’s largest shanty towns.

Many thanks to all the performers; students; staff and the audience for making it a great event.

HPV Vaccinations

Girls in Years 8 and 10-13 have recently received the second of their course of three HPV vaccinations. Further vaccinations will occur as follows:

Group 1 - Years 8 and 10 vaccinations will take place on 6 May 2010

Group 2 - Years 11-13 vaccinations will take place on 13 May 2010

Please avoid making any appointments for your daughter on these dates. Any queries to Mrs Mortimer.

Outstanding A level and GCSE results

Many congratulations to all our students on achieving their outstanding A Level and GCSE results.  Some of the headlines, together with a more detailed breakdown of results, are given on the Exam Results page.

Our photos show GCSE and AL students receiving their results.  Almost all our A Level and IB students have taken up places at their chosen universities and we wish them all well as they move on from Beaumont.

International Baccalaureate Success

Students in the first year group to have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the BeauSandVer consortium have just received their results. For Beaumont students the overall results are extremely successful, with some outstanding individual performances amongst them.

  • All the students have gained the Diploma
  • Two students have gained a bilingual diploma
  • Two students scored over 40 points:  Jack Clift achieved an outstanding 41 points which puts him in the top 4% worldwide and Heather Brown achieved a sensational 43 points, placing her in the top 2% worldwide.  Both  students have confirmed places at Oxford University.
  • A 29.4% of our students scored 36 points or more – only 15% of students taking the IB worldwide do this well.
  • The average result for Beaumont students is 33 points ; the  IB world average is between 29 and 30 points.

A huge well done to the students, and to all the IB staff who have worked very hard to make the programme a success.

Hertfordshire Swine Flu Update

Latest information website: http://www.hpa.org.uk/web/HPAweb&Page&HPAwebAutoListName/Page/1244763940922

Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust is reporting a steady increase in the number of cases of swine flu in Hertfordshire. Many schools have been affected and we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

We are aware of a small number of confirmed or suspected cases, within our school, of influenza A type H1N1 (also known as ‘swine flu’).

Schools are now being advised to stay open where there are cases of swine flu unless there are health and safety reasons that prevent this.

If you or your child develops symptoms of flu-like illness the advice of the Health Protection Agency is to stay at home and contact NHS Direct by phone (0845 46 47) or via the website nhsdirect.nhs.uk, follow the swine flu symptom checker and then phone your GP. Each case will be assessed and, if necessary, treatment will be provided.

The school is working closely with the Health Protection Agency, NHS colleagues and the local authority to monitor the situation.

Good basic hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including swine flu. This includes:

  • Covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible.
  • Disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully.
  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to your face or to other people.
  • Cleaning hard surfaces (such as door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product.
  • Making sure your children follow this advice.

For more information on swine flu call the national information line on 0800 1 513 513. Alternatively, visit the Health Protection Agency website at www.hpa.org.uk.

A pupil at Queens’ (secondary) school in Bushey has been confirmed as having swine flu. Based on Health Protection Agency advice, the school has been closed to all pupils and staff. The school will provide letters to parents containing further information and providing specific timescales for the proposed re-opening of the school. A number of Queens’ school pupils and staff who have reported flu-like symptoms will be offered Tamiflu as a precaution. Tamiflu is an anti-viral that is being used to treat those with the virus and which may also be effective for those at risk.

Health Protection Agency and NHS staff have visited the school to reassure staff, pupils and parents by providing detailed health advice and information.

Confirmed cases in schools will be dealt with on a case by case basis with advice provided by the Health Protection Agency and the local Primary Care Trust.

The Primary Care Trust is now reporting a total of 21 confirmed cases of swine flu in Hertfordshire and the county council is continuing to monitor the situation closely. We are liaising with other organisations in the county and the eastern region to ensure a coordinated approach.

It is important to remember that the majority of cases in the UK are mild and that when people are given anti-virals early enough they seem to be recovering.
