Celebrating Women in EngineeringPosted on 24/06/2015
Girls from across the school came together yesterday to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day 2015. The event took the form of an engineering challenge.
The girls were given the task of designing equipment to drop food aid safely in hard to reach areas. They had to work to a budget and cost, durability and overall effectiveness of delivery were combined in the judging process.
The after school session was organised by Dr Jones of the Science Department and included contributions from two local women engineers: Maha Salem is based at the University of Hertfordshire and has worked with Honda on their Asimo robot. Louise Hardy, a civil engineer, was responsible for the 2012 London Olympic Park and is a former Beaumont student. Members of the Science department (female and male!) were also on hand to help.
After a hotly-contested competition, the winning team came from Year 9 and Dr Jones and the guest speakers were delighted by the commitment and enthusiasm shown by all participants in the event.
