The PSHCE curriculum aims to help students to lead confident, healthy and responsible lives as individuals and as members of society. We encourage our students to study, reflect upon and discuss topical political, spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues, problems and events.
The department aims to enable pupils to:
- Develop confidence and responsibility and make the most their abilities.
- Develop a healthy, safer lifestyle.
- Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people.
- Develop knowledge and understand about becoming informed citizens.
- Develop skills of enquiry and communication.
- Develop skills of participation and responsible action.
All pupils participate in the PSHCE programme which includes, as appropriate for each age group, consideration of issues related to health education (including drug education), study skills and career guidance. The curriculum is delivered through PSHCE lessons, and the Curriculum Enrichment programme.
The programme aims to help pupils to establish themselves quickly and smoothly as members of the school community, to encourage the development of study skills, social skills, self-awareness, a sense of resonsibility and consideration for others, and to enable pupils to learn about opportunities in life and how to make the most of them.
Aspects of citizenship are incorporated in schemes of work for most subjects as well as being delivered through the PSHCE and Curriculum Enrichment programmes. One PSHCE lesson a week is dedicated to delivering the course in Year 7. This work is further developed in Years 8, 9 and 10 in the weekly lesson of PSHCE and via the cross-curricular approach which sees most subjects incorporating aspects of the citizenship curriculum into their schemes of work.

Assessment is not limited to written outcomes and any meaningful judgement of progress or attainment is based on a range of evidence. This includes assessing the learning as it is happening through observation, discussion or focused questioning; involving pupils in the process through peer or self-assessment; or sampling a range of work over a period of time. The same evidence may be used for a variety of purposes.
A variety of teaching strategies will be used, including class and group discussion, brain-storming, DVDs, role-play, quizzes, problem pages, decision making and problem solving exercises and worksheets. Outside speakers are also used.
