This qualification will give you the opportunity to develop many skills which will be of use to you, both in a sporting environment and in life in general. The course is not concerned with your sporting ability but instead will help you to develop many leadership skills, such as being able to organise others and to communicate with groups and individuals in a sporting setting. It is suitable for students who are primarily interested in recreational sport, but who would also benefit from developing leadership skills or who enjoy working with younger children
There may be a limited amount of written work to reinforce what you are learning, but on the whole this course will be delivered in a practical way.
The course is broken down into seven units. Unit 1-6 will be taken by the course teacher and unit 7 allows you to practice all the skills you have learnt.
Unit 1 - Planning, preparing and assisting a simple sporting activity.
In this unit you will have to plan some simple sporting activities and then deliver them to others. You might lead other members of your group or be able to lead younger children.
Unit 2 - Basic communication skills for leading a sporting activity.
This unit is all about how we communicate. You will look at different types of communication, both verbal and non-verbal, and discover the most effective ways to get your message across.
Unit 3 - Principles and practice in delivering a basic health and fitness session
You will have to plan and lead a basic fitness session. You will need to understand how a person’s lifestyle can affect their health and fitness.
Unit 4 - Understanding Fair Play in sport.
You will look at what is meant by ‘fair play’ and why it is important. You will need to demonstrate that your sessions are equitable.
Unit 5 - Understanding the role of the sports official.
You will look at the roles played by sports officials. You will evaluate sports officials, and have a go yourself.
Unit 6 - Understanding the scope of local sport and recreation activities.
You will need to investigate your local area, finding out what activities are on offer and how you could use your leadership skills in the community.
Unit 7 - Demonstration of leadership skills in sport
Putting all your skills into practice.
The course will involve working with local primary schools and taking small groups of KS2 pupils for sporting activities.
