Beaumont’s PE department is lively and enthusiastic and offers our students an exceptional range of opportunities in which to participate and learn about all aspects of sport and physical education.
Beaumont PE Department strives to create a fully inclusive environment in which all pupils have the opportunity to become physically, socially and morally literate individuals.
We aim to enrich the lives of our students through sport and physical activity and educate all of those we teach in the lifelong benefits of leading an active, healthy lifestyle.
During their time in the school, we aim for all pupils to take an active part in a wide range of activities and to be able to
- improve their own levels of performance
- make and apply decisions in different activities
- develop physically and mentally
- evaluate and make informed choices about a healthy and active lifestyle.
Years 7 – 9
All pupils have three lessons a week covering one sporting activity for a total of three weeks covering the concepts of competence, performance, creativity and healthy active lifestyles set out in the National Curriculum
Activities covered are:
Year 7
Speed, Agility and Quickness, Movement Dynamics, Invasion Games, Fitness, Dance, Health, Gymnastics, Indoor Athletics, Rounders, Tennis and Athletics.
Year 8
Speed, Agility and Quickness, Health, Dance, Basketball, Fitness, Box and Trampette, Rugby, Football, Netball, Hockey, Boxercise, Circuit Training, Cricket and Athletics.
Year 9
Sports Acrobatics, Lacrosse, Fitness, Trampolining, Health, Circuit Training, Games, Dance, Athletics and sample lessons of Ultimate Frisbee, Ultimate Golf, and Cheerleading.

At KS4 all pupils have three lessons a week. Pupils can select to follow the pathway most suited to the individual. Choices are:
- GCSE Physical Education
- BTEC First Certificate in Sport (additional Diploma course also available as an Option)
- Practical Activity and Sports Leaders Level 1 Award
- BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts (Dance)

Students can take their interest in PE further in Years 12 & 13 at Beaumont by taking AS and A2 level PE. Level 2 Sports Leadership and BTEC in Sport are also available. For details of all courses on offer at Key Stage 5 go to the BeauSandVer consortium website.
At KS3 pupils are assessed throughout the year on both their practical ability in a wide range of activities and their understanding of the key concepts within the National Curriculum for PE.
At KS4 the GCSE includes written theory examinations, on-going practical assessments and an examination in four performances, and an analysis of performance in one activity. The BTEC is all coursework based, with no external exam at the end. Assignments set can include written reports, presentations, power points, through witness statements and observations, posters and video.
The department is well resourced with a purpose built gymnasium and Hall available for indoor sports, a good range of sports pitches, athletics (field and track) facilities, and courts for netball, basketball and use for other sports such as lacrosse. In addition use is made of all weather /floodlit facilities at Clarence Park and Smallford (rugby and football).
The extra-curricular programme is extremely important to the department and school and helps to make sport at Beaumont the vibrant and successful activity it is. All staff within the Department contributes to the programme as well as other staff within the school who have expertise in sports. Clubs are organised during lunchtimes and after school. Fixtures are held mid week after school, during school hours for tournaments and at weekends.

The department also holds a weekly “Alternative Sports Night” with the support of local clubs and instructors where we provide pupils with the opportunity to try sports that are not offered within the curriculum.
Pupils can take part in the annual school Gymnastics and Dance Display, as well as represent the school at the St Albans Schools Gymnastics display at the Alban Arena and County Dance Festival. In many sports we are District Champions, County Champions, and have recently competed well at both Regional and National level.
