Beaumont School, St Albans, Hertfordshire
Information and Communication Technology

Welcome to Beaumont School ICT Department!

Confidence and competence in ICT are key skills which our students will find useful, if not essential, in many aspects of their current and future lives. Beaumont prides itself on the quality of ICT experience that we are able to offer our students, to give them the best possible chance of leaving school equipped to thrive in the modern world.

Aims

To develop ICT capability, so that young people know when it is appropriate or inappropriate to use computers and have the knowledge and skills to use them confidently when required.

Curriculum

We see Information & Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool to support and enhance learning in all curriculum areas.  Our pupils develop understanding and experience in using ICT skills as an integral part of their learning in all subject areas. Students are taught to use a wide range of applications. They become familiar with the use of the internet, intranet and e-mail and can research on multi-media.  They also use a range of subject-related software. In discrete lessons this will include desk top publishing, multimedia presentation software, database software, simulation and control insight software.

In Year 7 pupils are allocated a user identity which enables them to create a unique password with which they can gain access to the system, and to keep their work secure.  All Year 7 pupils receive ICT instruction during ICT lessons at Beaumont.  In addition, learning also takes place within other curriculum areas.  On entry to the school, they are given an e-mail address which they can use on any networked machine and at home.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

All Year 7 and 8 pupils follow the new ICT NC Strategy with one lesson per week.  All Year 9 pupils follow an in-house program to prepare them for the OCR National Level 2 course in Year 10. This course will also cover the relevant requirements of the ICT National Curriculum. All Year 9 students have one period of ICT per week

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

In September 2008 we started the OCR ICT Nationals Level 2 with all pupils at KS4 taking this qualification. The first cohort of results comes out this academic year. The OCR National Certificate in ICT is designed to:

  • stimulate students' creativity and develop real-world, practical skills that will motivate learning across a wide range of subjects.
  • develop students' ability to select and use digital applications appropriately and produce high quality outcomes;
  • promote the use of digital applications achieving a goal, rather than for their own sake;
  • enhance creativity and communication;
  • equip students with some of the skills that they will need in the workplace or in further education or training;
  • encourage students to reflect critically on their own and others' use of digital applications.

Students can achieve between one and four GCSEs depending on the quantity and quality of work undertaken. The aim is for all students to achieve one GCSE (Core Subject); this new course is assessed by 100% coursework - all students have to pass Unit 1 plus an extra half unit to gain at least one GCSE. However pupils wishing to to gain 2, 3 or 4 GCSEs also take the subject as an Option in Years 10 and 11. Further details can be found on the OCR website.

Assesment

At Key Stage 3 pupils will sit an online test having followed a structured ICT course. At Key Stage 4 pupils continue with ICT to GCSE level. ICT GCSEs are internally assessed and externally moderated (no exams).

Resources

Our facilities for Information and Communication Technology are excellent, comprising over 300 networked machines. The school has 4 full ICT rooms; 3 dual use rooms, PC’s in and around the sixth form common room for post-16 and machines in the library. Technology, Science, Art, Maths, Languages, Geography and Music all have machines for student use. On the 2007/XP network we make full use of the MS suite of programmes together with Macromedia and MatchWare and a wide range of applications for departments to use; all rooms have full Intranet/Internet access. All machines allow access to the Internet along a broadband connection. There is a continuously developing school Intranet providing additional resources for pupils, and access to the Hertfordshire Schools Intranet is also available.

We have an exciting range of computer peripherals eg colour and laser printers, digital (video and still) cameras, zip drives and scanners, all for use across the curriculum.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Pupils are encouraged to use computers at lunch times, whether to complete homework assignments or simply to use ICT to pursue their own enjoyment. There is also a girls’ computer club. A full list of extra-curricular clubs and activities, including those of interest to computer enthusiasts, can be downloaded here.
