An overview of the AS assessment code number 8040

Paper 1 code number 6101

I hour
60 marks

This will test knowledge of the content of unit 1, understanding and interpretation of given data

Paper 2 code number 6102

1 hour
60 marks

This will test knowledge of the content of unit 2, understanding and interpretation of given data

Paper 3 code number 6103A

Written part

38 marks
1 hour

This will test knowledge of the content of unit 3, understanding and interpretation of given data and other extensive stimulus material

Practical part

32 marks
Over two terms

This must be wholly and totally the work of the student with no help from family and friends. Teachers can give guidance but any direct intervention could lead to a reduction in the mark.

The students must decide on their own hypothesis to test and research the theory behind it for themselves over the weeks between October and Christmas. This is carried out solely as homework. Students can use the internet as a source of information but any plagiarisation w ill result in disqualification.

The practical is carried out within one week and should fit into lesson times although they may need to spend extra time in the laboratory in their free time.

There are two deadlines (given in the Biology calendar) that must be met; one for the plan and discussion and the other for the final submission.
