Beaumont School, St Albans, Hertfordshire

“Pupils achievements are very good and their attitudes to school life and work are very positive.”

(Ofsted Report)

The Beaumont Pupil Committee (BPC) was launched in January 2005 as the revised and revamped version of the student council. The committee is led by sixth formers with members from years 7 to 11.

Report 2006-2007

The BPC was completely reordered and rearranged at the start of 2006 with Mr. Cross and myself sending out messages to ensure new representatives were elected in class and a new venue of room 40 was selected, with representatives meeting weekly during Friday registration. Whilst in the beginning attendance was patchy at best, through progressive advertising through posters and assemblies, it vastly improved through the year.

It was decided that a mix of upper and lower school was better as opinion from the full spectrum can be heard and avoids upper school supremacy on opinions.

Actions/ Achievements

Over the last year the BPC has become increasingly active in all facets of school activity and policy decision. Here is a selection of the actions taken.

  • Meetings with Mrs Maher from the extended school programme organised graffiti sheets on the future of St.Albans .
  • Reviewing of home school agreement and anti bullying policy.
  • Trip to the Hertfordshire council school transport day at University of Hertfordshire where BPC members contributed.
  • Upkeep of a consistent governor and teacher link.
  • Upkeep of weekly minutes being distributed to forms.
  • Regular meetings with senior staff to discuss points raised during meetings on issues such as awards assemblies
  • Regular weekly meetings with an average of 30 consistent representatives representing a diverse range of pupils across the school.
  • The installation of two new benches, a 70 box paper recycling scheme and the finalising of two new water fountains being installed.
  • The transfer of control from myself to Jake Hodges, Beth Templeton and Pippa Morris.

Aims for the future

  • Complete coverage of all forms with reps from each. Continued to attempt this with new waves of posters and advertising.
  • The establishment of a BPC box for issues for reps and pupils.
  • Beaumontschool.com Website section for the BPC.
  • The possibility BPC section of Beaumont Life suggestion of A4 page monthly minutes.
  • Continuation of strong teacher and governor link to ensure views consistently get across.
